The Foundation of the Ten Commandments

Jesus Questioned by the Pharisees

Matthew 22:34 (KJV) But when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together.

Matthew 22:35 (KJV) Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying,

Matthew 22:36 (KJV) Master, which is the great commandment in the law?

Matthew 22:37 (KJV)  Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

Matthew 22:38 (KJV) This is the first and great commandment.

Matthew 22:39 (KJV) And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

Matthew 22:40 (KJV) On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Jesus Questioned by the Scribes

Mark 12:28 (KJV) And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all?

Mark 12:29 (KJV) And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:

Mark 12:30 (KJV) And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.

Mark 12:31 (KJV) And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.

Mark 12:32 (KJV) And the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but he:

Mark 12:33 (KJV) And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbour as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.

Mark 12:34 (KJV) And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no man after that durst ask him any question.

The Ten Commandments

Exodus 20:1 (KJV) And God spake all these words, saying,

Exodus 20:2 (KJV) I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

Commandment 01 - Put God First

Exodus 20:3 (KJV) Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

Commandment 02 - Don’t Make Or Worship Idols

Exodus 20:4 (KJV) Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:

Exodus 20:5 (KJV) Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;

Exodus 20:6 (KJV) And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

Commandment 03 - Don’t Curse

Exodus 20:7 (KJV) Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

Commandment 04 - Don’t Work On Sunday

Exodus 20:8 (KJV) Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

Exodus 20:9 (KJV) Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:

Exodus 20:10 (KJV) But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:

Exodus 20:11 (KJV) For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

Commandment 05 - Honour Your Parents

Exodus 20:12 (KJV) Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

Commandment 06 - Don’t Commit Murder

Exodus 20:13 (KJV) Thou shalt not kill.

Commandment 07 - Don’t Commit Adultery

Exodus 20:14 (KJV) Thou shalt not commit adultery.

Commandment 08 - Don’t Steal

Exodus 20:15 (KJV) Thou shalt not steal.

Commandment 09 - Don’t Lie

Exodus 20:16 (KJV) Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.

Commandment 10 - Don’t Covet

Exodus 20:17 (KJV) Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.

The Consequence Of Breaking One Commandment

James 2:10 (KJV) For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.

James 2:11 (KJV) For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law.
